In Rome, the aspirant actress Laura is invited to an audition for the film "La Vita Che Vorrei" by the director, Luca. Laura is the lover of Raffaele, a man with a good standing in the cinema industry, and performs well, reading the dialog with the successful actor Stefano. The extrovert Laura and the self-controlled Stefano are cast in the lead roles and they have a love affair as filmmaking progresses. However, their relationship has ups and downs with the jealousy and ego-centrism of Stefano in a parallel with the characters of the movie.

Laura, poco più che trentenne e con un'incerta carriera di attrice alle spalle, viene scelta come protagonista per girare un film in costume ambientato nell'Ottocento, che narra di una sfortunata storia d’amore. Sul set fa la conoscenza di Stefano, trentacinquenne attore piuttosto affermato, che torna a recitare dopo un film non riuscito. Tra i due nasce una relazione che ripercorre nella realtà le tappe e gli sviluppi della storia recitata sul set...
