La serie segue le indagini di un'unità speciale della polizia di Copenaghen formata da Katrina Ries Jensen, vicecommissario donna dalla ferrea volontà e da Thomas Schaffer, psichiatra forense alquanto misterioso e ambiguo. L'unità indaga su omicidi seriali i cui autori sono dei serial killer aticipi che nell'uccidere non perseguono solo la sofferenza e la morte delle loro vittime ma uno scopo più grande. Per riuscire a fermare il killer i due devono immedesimarsi in lui, capirne perfettamente il modo di pensare e perché uccide e quindi riuscire ad anticipare le sue mosse per catturarlo. Sullo sfondo ci sono le storie personali dei due protagonisti che hanno, o almeno provano ad avere, una vita al di fuori del lavoro.
