[ITA] Kurt è un grande ammiratore del violinista Körner e ne vuole diventare studente. Il musicista accetta, ma durante le lezioni sboccia tra i due la passione. La coppia è però ostacolata dalle rispettive famiglie e dai conoscenti, nonché da tutte le istituzioni repressive della società...

[ENG] A frank story of homosexual love and tragedy made about 90 years ago, featuring such amazing things as a same-sex dance hall and a drag ball as background to dramatic scenes. It still packs a wallop, thanks to its purpose as an impassioned plea for justice and a wonderful central performance by the Conrad Veidt. Kino has just released this reconstructed version of about 50 minutes, based in large part on a print discovered in Moscow, with intertitles and a few stills telling the rest. It's a an effective drama and a fascinating history lesson. A good bit is still missing, but the most amazing things turn up, so maybe more of Anders als die Andern will as well. To have this much is wonderful.

Nel 1919 Richard Oswald scrive - in collaborazione con il dott. Hirschfeld, pionere della liberazione sessuale - e dirige un film sull'essere gay, l'omofobia e la repressione causata dal paragrafo 175 del codice penale tedesco (in vigore fino al 1994) che puniva l'omosessualità come un crimine.

Lo scandalo sollevato reintrodusse la censura nel 1920 e i continui tagli, nonché i roghi nazisti, lo hanno ridotto dagli originali 90 a 50 minuti.

Presumibilmente l'interpretazione di Conrad Veidt fu il primo personaggio omosessuale della storia del cinema.
