With a title like Red State you'd be forgiven for thinking that this is a Dolph Lungren post Soviet era action flick... you'd be wrong... but the good Lord would forgive you.
This is actually a film touching on the subject of religious fundamentalism... Christian fundamentalism... in Bible belt America to be exact... What a brave boy ol' Kev Smith is eh?!
Firstly it has to be said that the cast isnt exactly stella with John Goodman being the only household name in the cast, having said that there are some good performances from these guys mainly in the form of the "Preacher" and Goodman himself.
The budget is small, however this doesnt affect the overall production. This is a Kevin Smith film and those that know his work will spot his unpolished style from a country mile away. Those who know of him will also know he usually churns out "stoner"comedies so this "serious" effort may come as a surprise.
It has a politcal message to it, but I feel KS has chickened out a little bit on this one.
Ok, so he's shining the spotlight on the uber crazy "christians" in American society, on contentious issues such as the governments encroachment on civil liberty's, * rights and hate crimes but in the end I think "Dogma" did a far better job than this effort. I said earlier that this was a serious effort but at times you're left confused expecting a punchline to come (maybe its just me expectig KS to do"funny" again?)
This had the potential to be real earth mover of film but in the end it just a half decent stab at a "political" message film crossbred with... well... I dont know what really!
KS could have done so much more with this but somehow cameup short.
Kudos for poking the "crazies" with a stick Kev but you really should have used a bigger one!
I'm giving this 6/10 rating however I'd give the last 30 mins 8/10 mainly for Goodmans performance but also for the clever political nuances at the end not to mention how the "seige" was actually ended... that amused me no end!
This is my 1st post on here so I'm not sure if this is any good but hey check the film out and see if we agree, its watchable, quite entertaining and may well get Kev Smith a bullet in the mail!

but curiosity always get the better of this cat so no doubt i will take a squizzydo at that one when it surfaces haha
